Dr. Ramakanta Panda – This is when he started dreaming of becoming a heart surgeon

I had some interest, since one of my uncles is an ENT surgeon. Then, one of my cousins got married to a doctor; that had some impact on me. I clearly remember one incident that made me aspire to become a heart surgeon. In 1969, LIFE magazine had done a cover feature on Dr Denton A. Cooley (president and surgeon-in-chief, who founded the Texas Heart Institute), one of the all-time great heart surgeons, who had done the first heart transplant in the US. My uncle had brought a copy of the magazine, which had a big picture of Dr Cooley. That is when I had the dream of becoming a heart surgeon.

Dr. Naresh Trehan – This is how he decided to learn the latest heart surgeries

I became a cardiologist to overcome my frustration. When I was studying at King George Medical University, Lucknow, I used to see hundreds of patients dying of heart diseases either due to lack of treatment or facilities. This used to frustrate me a lot. So, I decided to move to US to learn the latest heart surgeries and then benefit the people back in India.

Dr. Naresh Trehan – His Parents didn’t want him to be doctor

My parents did not want me to be a doctor. They felt that doctors could not give time to their kids and had no time for themselves. But the more they discouraged me, the firmer grew my resolve about joining medicine.
